Ohio State is ranked #12 and still out. Boise State is ranked #25, but it's the highest-ranked team from the six smaller conferences, so its automatic bid takes the #12 seed.

This is our projection. We treat each conference's highest-ranked team as its champion.

Questions and answers

How does the 12-team CFP bracket work?

The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions get in, along with the highest-ranked team from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 and Sun Belt. The next seven highest-ranked teams fill the field. The top four teams get byes, and #5 through #8 host first-round games.

Why can a team ranked #12 miss the playoff?

If one of the five automatic spots goes to a team outside the top 12, that team takes the #12 seed. That pushes the team ranked #12 out unless it won its way in.

When is the real CFP bracket revealed?

On Selection Day, Sunday, Dec. 6. See every ranking date and who picks the teams.

When do the playoff games start?

The first round is Dec. 18 and 19. The national championship is Jan. 25 in Las Vegas.

Can I make my own CFP bracket?

Yes. Rank your Top 25, and we'll build the 12-team bracket your ranking makes.
